WINTERLING ARC Giveaway!

Hello all! This week I’m giving away an advance review copy of Sarah Prineas’s new book, Winterling.

Sarah Prineas is one of my favorite children’s fantasy writers. She writes like a great watercolor artist, painting vivid pictures with spare and economical prose that makes every syllable count. It’s a perfect style for the kind of book Prineas specializes in: tales of mystery and magic deep enough to satisfy readers of all ages. Her Magic Thief series is absolutely fantastic fantasy; such a great read that I ripped through the whole trilogy in under a week and immediately went looking for more.

Happily more has now arrived!

Winterling is aimed at slightly older readers but written in the same clean, fluid style as Prineas’s earlier books. And it has a kickass girl hero. And it mingles this-worldly mystery with other-worldly magic in a dark and brooding setting that calls to mind of one of my very favorite childhood series: Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising books.

So what more do you need to know? Great book. And it’s free to the lucky lucky winner!

Here’s how I’m going to run the giveaway:

  1. You pick a number between 1 and 245.
  2. I quote you a line from that page of the book.
  3. Then I employ a random number generator (aka, my four-year-old) to pick the winning number.
  4. If two people are equally close to the winning number, we’ll just make the random number generator do his thing again until we get a winner.

The Random Number Generator is currently obsessed with Very Large Numbers, so there should be no problem getting him to pick a passel of ‘em; the only challenge will be getting him to pick something smaller than a googol….

Deadline for picking your page number is 5 pm Monday December 12th. So have at it!

I’ve been hearing so many good things about this book! (Nicole from the Center for Fiction, fan of your SciFi. Waves.)

    • Chris says:

Hi Nicole! Thanks for entering! Here’s your line from page 233:

“Run, Rook!” she panted. The thought of him shot down with one of the Mor’s black arrows made her heart hurt.

  2. Cate Gardner says:

    245

    Looks fantastic

    • Chris says:

Hmmm … I’d better pick carefully as this is the very lastest page, and I don’t want to give anything away.

      How’s this?

      And she jumped.

Thank you so much for offering this contest, Chris! I finished reading the Magic Thief triology as though I’d lived it and now two of my three children are avidly reading at bedtime with my 8 yr old stating proudly she’ll start them next week. It’s great when reading can encompass the whole family!

  4. Jodi says:

So looking forward to this book! Page 199 please :)

    • Chris says:

      Here you go. Enjoy!

Fer heard a whirling in her ears, the sound of the wind when she and Phouka had ridden through the sky all night long, and then everything went black.

  5. Pat Esden says:

I’d love so much to read this early–and even more so after the line from 233.

    • Chris says:

Glad you liked it! Here’s another one to whet your curiosity:

Fer nodded. Her suspicions were right — the Lady wasn’t the true Lady of the land. “I can go back there,” Fer said to the rustling bushes. “I can stop the Mor, if you’ll show me how.”

  6. Michele says:

I’ve been looking forward to this book for a while!

    • Chris says:

Okay, I leave you with a longer bit before I sign off for the evening. Enjoy….

Ahead was the house, the windows blazing with light. On the front porch stood a dark figure, the porch light bright behind her.

“Wait here,” Fer whispered, and, leaving the boy, squelched across the rain-damp grass to the porch.

Grand-Jane came down the steps, her mouth open to scold. When she saw Fer she stopped.

Silently, Fer flung herself at her grandma, a quick, fierce hug, sorry-for-being-late, sorry-for-making-you-worry.

Grand-Jane returned the hug, making Fer feel warm and safe, then set her back, arms on her shoulders, looking her over. “You’re wet.” Her eyes widened and her hands gripped with worry. “You’re bleeding!”

Fer shook her head. “Not me.” She turned and pointed. The boy crouched there, a lump of shadow at the edge of the circle of brightness shed by the porch light. “It’s his blood. Wolves bit him.”

I’m one of the proud sistas! I pick lucky number 13!!!

    • Chris says:

Okay, one more before I go. And thanks for stopping by!

She pulled away from him, wiping her bloody hand on the moss. “I just saved you from those wolves, in case you didn’t notice.”

  8. Myrna Foster says:

I’m going with 7. Thanks for doing this! I love her Magic Thief series.

    • Chris says:

It is a great series, isn’t it? It feels made to be read aloud. I enjoyed reading it to myself, since I’m that sort of grownup ;-) … but all the while I kept thinking how fun it would be to read it aloud. Can’t wait to read it aloud with my kids. Here’s your quote:

The forest grew thicker. She’d gone this far before, but never at night.

  9. Bev Ehresman says:

Page 207. Got to read this book.

  10. Alaina says:

Ohhh man i want to read this so bad!!
    how about 218???

  11. Daniel Mauvais says:

    101 please.
    This book sounds great!

  12. Eleanor Ditzel says:

I fell in love with Fer when I saw the cover. I want to know her — what makes her tick — what makes her courage flow!

    I choose page 189.

    • Chris says:

Yep, it’s an awesome cover. Reminds me of the old Black Stallion books that I obsessed over when I was a horse-crazy 11 year old.

And funny you should mention it, since your chosen page contains a cover-related quote….

Reaching up, she grabbed his mane and flung herself onto his back.

  13. Andrea Chettle says:

Great giveaway! I hope this is international as I live in the UK (crosses fingers) I pick page 41

    Thanks

    • Chris says:

Yes, we ship to the Fog-Wreathed Isles….

Now that she thought about it, the weather didn’t feel right to Fer either.

  14. Barbie says:

I teach middle school and would love to add this book to my classroom library. (After I read it first!) I pick 197.

  15. Graham Squair says:

    132. My mom and Sarah were buddies in grad school and I’ve read all her books!

  16. I think I will choose page number 237. I loved reading the Magic Thief trilogy. Sarah is a great writer. Whether I win this or not, I will be adding it to my “to buy” list. Since she is one of my favorite authors, it gets bumped to the top of the list. Hey, it’s my list, I can do what I want to with it. :p

  17. E.C. Myers says:

    111.

Can’t wait to read this! Thanks for the giveaway.

  18. Yvette says:

Looking forward to this book, and also to the next book in Inquisitor series! I loved the first one.
    Page 203 please!

    • Chris says:

      Thanks! And here’s your quote:

Fer nodded. That was the story she’d been trying to find. But she still didn’t know it’s ending.

  19. cindy says:

Magic 8 ball says “Try again later” – useless piece of plastic, so I”ll go with 177

    • Chris says:

      Magic Page 177 says:

Fer felt the Lady’s chill magic settling over her; She blinked and shook her head, fighting to escape the net of her glamorie.

  20. Chris says:

Oops! I failed to ask my Random Number Generator to pick a number two nights in a row! I’ll do it when he gets home from school today and announce the winner this evening (and email whoever it is for his/her address so I can get the book out tomorrow). Thanks again to you all for playing!

  21. Chris says:

And the magic number was …. one hundred and six! Which means it’s a tie between Daniel Mauvais at 101 and E. C. Myers at 111. Each of you want to pick another number between 1 and 245 — and we’ll consult the Oracle one more time? Good luck!!

  22. Daniel Mauvais says:

    Ooh! 67 please.
    This is really exciting! (:

    • Chris says:

Oh great! Glad you stopped by! I was getting ready to email you since you hadn’t answered! Let me ping E.C. now….

      • Chris says:

Okay, E.C. picked 227, so I’ll consult my Random Number Generator and hopefully this round will be the last. If we have another, I’ll just flip a coin and get it over with — as long as that’s okay with you two. Otherwise this would start to get ridiculous!!!

  23. Daniel Mauvais says:

    Awesome, can’t wait! :)

  24. Michael Yolen says:

I just found out via Goodreads that you’ve written 3 books I have not yet read, and worse yet, I didn’t know you’d written. So I feel both how the heck? and yay! I was at Norwecon when you won the Philip K Dick award and I wished you had been there-I really wanted to meet you-but now I get to read more of your books. As you can see, this has nothing to do with the GIveaway :)
I LOVE Spin State and Spin Control.

    A fan,

    Michael
