My first novel, Spin State was an Amazon Top Ten SF Pick for 2003, a Kansas City Star Noteworthy Book for 2003, and a finalist for the Philip K. Dick Award, as well as the John Campbell, Spectrum, and Prometheus Awards.

SPIN CONTROL (Bantam Spectra, 2006)

Modesitt, Jr. The second book in the Spin Trilogy, Spin Control won the Philip K. Dick Award and was also a Lamba Award finalist. Booklist wrote that “In Moriarty’s high-stakes, tension-riddled addition to visions of the post-human future, the characters have the complexity of motivation and backstory to make this more than just another dire-future thriller.” Publishers Weekly wrote: “This richly textured second novel explores issues of identity and loyalty, swapping quantum mechanics for complexity theory and mystery for suspense … Where Spin State was nominated for awards, this sequel may win them.” My favorite review came from Scifi.com, however: “The cynical and yet somehow still romantic spirit of John Le Carré infuses Spin Control. The Middle Eastern setting, as well as the shifting sands of loyalties and allegiances, personal and otherwise, that leave readers feeling as if there is nothing solid left to stand on, nothing and no one that can be trusted, make it as much a traditional spy thriller as it is a science fiction novel. The Inquisitor’s Apprentice is a new departure for me: a YA fantasy set in turn-of-the-century New York. It follows the adventures of Sacha Kessler, a young Jewish boy who discovers a talent for seeing magic and is apprenticed to the feared and hated NYPD Inquisitors. It’s still only out in the form of advance review copies for now, but it got a starred review from Kirkus, and New York Times Bestseller Garth Nix called it: “A wonderfully inventive and fascinating story of the clash of ancient magic and early-twentieth century technology. A compelling book that I read in a single sitting and highly recommend.”

GHOST SPIN (Bantam Spectra, Spring 2012)
Ghost Spin is the final volume of the Spin Trilogy. I have been very slow with this book, but it’s now in the final stages of revision … and I am pleased. Hopefully that means the delays were worth it. That said though I’ll be done with it sometime in the next month or so, it won’t hit bookstores until Spring of 2012. (Sorry!) In the meantime, however, I’m always looking for beta readers. So if you’re among the many readers who have emailed me to ask when it is coming out, then this might be your chance to read it six months before it hits the bookstore shelves. Most of my beta readers are people I know personally, since I have to trust them with a copy of the manuscript many months before publication. But if you’ve corresponded with me in the past or commented on this blog enough for me to be confident that you are who you say you are, then drop me a line and let me know you’re interested.
